OVERVIEW
Far Northern Thailand bordering Laos and Myanmar is a beautiful, green, scenic area, rich in culture and ethnic diversity. However for many small groups of people living in remote traditional villages and speaking their own languages, the process of integration into Thai society and modernisation is difficult. Many lack citizenship, have insufficient land and no money to continue to high school education levels. Many people are recent refugees fleeing Myanmar or leaving a difficult life in China behind.
Human trafficking, drug abuse, cultural erosion, urban drift and lack of job opportunities are some of the common problems faced by the people here.Work with a local NGO and assist with their development work. Help them document their activities and write submissions whilst you gain experience and first hand knowledge of development work in a rural developing setting.
Teach kids English so as they have a chance for a non-exploitive job and gain a path out of poverty. Travel to villages with the staff whilst they conduct information gathering or campaigns or work to get people their basic human right of having citizenship. Develop friendships with the staff and local people and understand the life of villagers in South East Asia. Kick off your career in Education or Development whilst you help others in need and gain a rich personal experience at the same time.
ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers live in a volunteer communal share house in a small village, providing wonderful insight into the hill tribe community. The villagers live in a very close community. Many facilities are shared, including rooms, toilets and kitchens. Volunteers quickly become immersed in the village culture, learning to cook, use local transport and travel by bicycle.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Many of the staff in the organisations you will be working with speak a little bit of English and are keen to improve their skills and standard. We highly encourage you to learn a little Thai whilst you are in Thailand as it will help you get by and get to know the locals.
