Placement Information
In Kenya the project work is varied and incorporates both community and wildlife based projects. Based at Camp Kenya, which is run by our partner, Camps International, you will assist in a development program which includes construction work on the local school or health centre, teaching, agricultural work, power and water systems, building sports facilities and sponsorship. You may also be assisting with wildlife projects that include marine parks, elephant parks and a Colobus Monkey sanctuary. A professional expatriate management team staffs Camp Kenya, and you will be working alongside local tradesmen and wildlife professionals from the surrounding community who are employed to facilitate the projects.
Accommodation
Camp Kenya is a purpose-built camp located 50km south of Mombasa and just 4km from the Indian Ocean and a stunning beach. The accommodation at Camp Kenya consists of either basic dormitory-style accommodation in a school building or simple safari-style tents. Special attention has been made for environmental and climate considerations (heat!) and the tents are light, airy, cool and fully netted to reduce mosquito or insect risks.
Free Time Suggestions
In your free time you can choose to do activities such as climbing Mount Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro, big game fishing, kite surfing, scuba diving, trekking and mountain biking. The nearest beach to the Camp is a short, 15 minute drive through the bush. You will visit the beach every week for adventure sports and, of course, some well-earned time chilling out. Aqualand provides you with a range of watersports. It is also a great place to barbeque and you can take a local dhow out to the sandbank to eat, drink and catch octopus in the shallow reef.
