PLACEMENTS
Placements in India are available in a small town in rural India approximately three hours from Mumbai. The area has numerous villages, 30% of which are tribal. This area is subject to monsoon rains in the May/June time when it can be very lush and green with fantastic waterfalls. December onwards is warm and dry and a great time to visit this region.

Students may volunteer on the following projects:

Teaching
Volunteers are required to assist local staff in government schools to teach English, Maths, handicrafts, and sports to children in rural areas. The children are tribal with no formal educational background. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to develop teaching aids and syllabus programs for teachers.

Medical, Nursing and Health Care
Volunteers may conduct health awareness camps for adolescents, assist in health check-up camps, dental check ups for children and adults, or in disability care centres. Students who sign-up for India may work in small groups on a rotational basis between government hospitals, local clinics and mobile medical van observing and assisting local medical staff.

Care Work
Students with an interest in social and care work may choose to work in a disbility care centre, orphanage or school assisting and observing local staff.

On arrival in-country you will be able to discuss the various opportunities and centres that have the capacity to take volunteers at the time you are in India. You will then be able to choose where you would like to work based on your skills and interests.

ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers will be placed in a volunteer share house. Volunteer accommodation is comfortable and clean but can be basic.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Many of the staff in the organisations you will be working with speak English and are keen to improve their skills and standard. We highly encourage you to learn a little Hindi and Marathi the local dialect whilst you are in India as it will help you get by and get to know the locals.

ABOUT INDIA
India is one of the most diverse cultures in the world. Its fascinating mix of religions, festivals, temples, bazaars, exotic and colourful people and beautiful landscapes make it a compelling country. It is a country of contrasts and contradictions, of great wealth and poverty; a country that embraces the past and the present, the spiritual and the material. Most families are Hindu. Volunteers will have plenty of opportunity to learn about Hinduism. Families tend to go to the temple once a week and volunteers are usually invited to join. Many people have a shrine of some description in their homes, devoted to their god/guru of choice, where they can perform/practise pooja (worship).
