Medical, Health, Teaching, Care Work, Social Work

PLACEMENTS
We work with programs devoted to social work in Quito city. On arrival in-country you will be able to visit the clinics and centres that have the capacity to take volunteers at the time you are in Ecuador. You will then be able to choose where you would like to work based on your skills and interests. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers who already have a basic or intermediate level of Spanish to improve their language skills dramatically.

Volunteers can work in the following areas:

Medical and Nursing
Volunteers with some medical experience may work as assistants to local medical staff as part of a clinical placement. You will be able to observe, experience and possibly assist with medical practice in clinics and hospitals in a developing country.

Assisting in Social Work
Volunteers may work with children who need care in a variety of ways. They provide basic assistance in feeding, playing with, dressing, washing the children etc. in one of a range of institutions.

Assisting with Street Children Outreach
In this role, volunteers work in centres created to provide a place for street kids to relax, do homework, play games, eat food, and socialise. Volunteers assist with these activities. These children spend much of their day on the streets in Quito selling sweets, cigarettes and lottery tickets and welcome a friendly face in a safe environment.

Teaching
Volunteers can also opt to teach English, science, sports, music or art at schools in Quito or in a local orphanage.

ACCOMMODATION
Each volunteer is housed in a safe and comfortable local home within Quito, with a middle to upper class family. The family will speak little English.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
It is highly recommended that volunteers learn some basic Spanish prior to placement to help them converse and improve over the placement period. 20 hours of additional Spanish lessons in Quito are included in the program fee.
