Construction

Kenya & Peru

Students have the opportunity to work on construction projects in either Kenya or Peru. Construction work may involve working on community projects with a local organisation and assisting in the construction of schools and community or health centres.

Kenya

In Kenya, the project work is varied and incorporates both community and wildlife based projects. Based at Camp Kenya, which is run by our partner, Camps International, you will assist in a development program which includes construction work on the local school or health centre, teaching, agricultural work, power and water systems, building sports facilities and sponsorship. You may also be assisting with wildlife projects that include marine parks, elephant parks and a Colobus Monkey sanctuary. A professional expatriate management team staffs Camp Kenya, and you will be working alongside local tradesmen and wildlife professionals from the surrounding community who are employed to facilitate the projects.

Peru
Students may work on a number of community projects with a local organisation in and around Cusco and The Sacred Valley. While carrying out the placement, students also have the opportunity to continue their orientation Spanish lessons in the afternoon. Community and construction projects may include the following:

• Building schools and community centres
• Teaching adult literacy classes
• Tutoring in schools
• Working with community and women’s groups.

Students will work closely with the in-country agent to establish a roster based on which projects are running while they are in country and what they are interested in. At the same time, students should keep in mind that they will need to work as a team to complete all tasks. There is also opportunity to do construction work within schools after school hours, so students should be keen to teach as well as help with local building projects.
