In countries such as India, Nepal, Ghana, India and Peru, students have the opportunity to undertake basic care and social work in local communities.
India
The India placement gives students the opportunity to carry out care
work in a school for the physically handicapped or care work with
children in a local orphanage. The days are rarely structured and so
students need to be flexible and proactive to manage their own
placement.
Nepal
In Nepal, students will have the opportunity to lend a hand in a local
orphanage and help the kids with their homework, general assistance
around the home or with gardening and any renovation happening. The days
are rarely structured and so students need to be flexible and proactive
to manage their own placement. We work with four orphanages, two of
which work with children with mental and physical disabilities.
Vietnam
In Vietnam, a limited number of places are available for experienced
volunteers in
disabled children’s centres and orphanages based in and around Hanoi.
Volunteers are required to assist local staff to care for Autistic,
Downs Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy children. Hanoi is a busy, vibrant
city and volunteers will be immersed in the hustle and bustle of
urban Vietnamese life.
Ghana
Students work in an orphanage with orphans, helping them with homework and general maintenance of the orphanage. The days are rarely structured and so students need to be flexible and proactive to manage their own placement.
Peru
Students may work on a number of community projects with a local organisation in and around Cusco and The Sacred Valley. While carrying out the placement, students also have the opportunity to continue their orientation Spanish lessons in the afternoon. Community project opportunities may include the following:
• Building schools and community centres
• Teaching adult literacy classes
• Tutoring in schools
• Working with community and women’s groups.
Students will work closely with the in-country agent to establish a roster based on which projects are running while they are in country and what they are interested in. At the same time, students should keep in mind that they will need to work as a team to complete all tasks.
