ABOUT CAMBODIA TOURISM/HOSPITALITY
Cambodia, a developing country, borders Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand in the region of South East Asia. Siem Reap is a town built on tourism for visitors wishing to see the Angkor Archaeological Park. Angkor Wat, a UNESCO registered world heritage site since 1992, is not only rich in archaeological monuments, ruins and statues, but cultural heritage and social tourism experiences, too. On average visitors stay 2.5 days at the temples and the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism estimates the average length of stay for tourists to Cambodia was 6.3 days in 2005.

Cambodia’s recent history also forms a marketable trade in dark tourism. Its Killing Fields and Prisoner of War camp S-21 are stark reminders of the tragic Khmer Rouge era (1975-1979), which is still very much part of Cambodia’s living social history today and current tourism trade.

Further south, situated at the gulf of Thailand, lies the beach resort Sihanoukville and Cambodia’s French colonial past can be explored at both Kep and Kampot. Throughout Cambodia there are further temples to see, national parks to explore and natural wonders to enjoy. Rare animal species can also be found including the near extinct, freshwater Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Mekong, vultures in the far north at Preah Vihear and moon bears and sun bears in a sanctuary at Tamao zoo just outside of Phnom Penh.
