ABOUT PERU
The most famous of Peru’s sights is Machu Picchu, situated near Cusco. The four-day Inca Trail hike will have adventurous travellers trekking through the Andes to the famous site. Cusco is the archaeological capital of the Americas and the oldest continuously inhabited city. It is 3,326 metres above sea level so it may take a few days to acclimatise. Cusco is a beautiful city with cobbled street, markets and ornate churches. Millions of tourists come to Cusco every year. It lies in the heart of the Andes with stunning scenery surrounding it. The indigenous population is the largest of all the South American countries. The national language is South American Spanish. The main tribes are the Quechua and the Aymara with other Amazonian tribes making up the remainder. They have maintained much of their traditional customs, which can especially be seen in the smaller villages.
