Thailand

Construction, Teaching, Community Work

Volunteers in Thailand will be placed in Chiang Rai, in the northern hill tribes of Thailand. This is a scenic area of Thailand, located in the hills. The placement is in the forest less than 30 minutes from Chiang Rai. People in this area are from Thai Karen, Lahu, Lanna and Akha tribes.

Volunteers work with a local Thai non-government organisation in rural areas helping the people with issues such as poverty, unemployment and lack of Thai citizenship. There is a core of volunteer teachers and workers, all working toward this common goal.

There are two placements available in Thailand with the NGO. Students may choose one of the following options.

Teaching English
Volunteers also teach basic English skills. The level of English is very poor so volunteers need to bring plenty of teaching aids and develop their own lesson plans. The aim of learning English is to increase opportunities for employment.

Construction

This placement is for those who are happy to get their hands dirty, who like physical labour, and the sense of achievement felt when a job is completed. Volunteers may work on construction and agricultural projects such as:

• Building water tanks
• Extending waterpipe systems
• Building check dams
• Building school classrooms
• Developing the agricultural project
• Helping in the vegetable garden

The organisation regularly hosts educational cultural activites, such as film nights to teach children about human trafficking. Volunteers will have the opportunity to involve themselves in these workshops and cultural events.

ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers live with other volunteers in shared accommodation. Regular contact is made with local communities providing a wonderful insight into the hill-tribe people. The villagers live in close communities with many shared facilities, including rooms, toilets and kitchens. Volunteers will become immersed in the village culture, learning to cook, use local transport and travel by bicycle.
