Teaching, Care Work, Construction

In Tanzania we work with a local organisation in Arusha, which places volunteers in a Maasai Village School located at the base of Mt Meru – gateway to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

The volunteer work in Tanzania is based around a Maasai Village School where volunteers can be involved in:

Teaching:
Education is a strong focus in Africa, but in some areas teachers are in short supply to the numbers of children attending school. Volunteers are able to assist the local teachers and help to improve child literacy rates in the primary school.

Pre-School/Care Work:
There is a Nursery School in the Maasai Village, where volunteers can assist the teachers to care for the younger children through games and activities. This is well suited to volunteers who may not feel comfortable teaching the older children.

Light Renovation/Construction::
Volunteers can assist in building new desks and bookshelves etc for the school, as well as painting both equipment and classrooms. There is also the possibility of larger type construction projects such as building new classroom blocks, new toilet facilities, or renovating the school kitchen.

ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers are accommodated in the teacher housing at the Village on a twin share basis. The accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable. Presently there is no electricity in the village. Meals are provided and are cooked by a local woman from the village.
