Building, Conservation, Teaching

We work with programs devoted to social work in Quito. Participants can work in the following areas:

Teaching
Whether certified or not, students can teach English, sciences, computing, sports, music and arts in English at basic levels in a variety of locations. Please remember that schools in Quito are closed from mid-July to early September.

Care Work
Students can carry out care work in orphanages, home/day care centres, special needs centres or hospitals. Care work in orphanages may involve general day care and teaching, feeding, dressing, washing and playing with the children. In special needs centres, students work with and provide care for Down sydrome and disabled children. Care work in hospitals involves working with terminally ill kids and keeping their spirits up by  playing games, singing and staying positive. Participants working in clinics help care for the children in a number of ways. Specific to this work is making them feel secure and happy while reaffirming the therapies provided for them by the centre. These children are always in need of new stimulating activities.

Most of the projects are located in the old town of Quito, which is a colonial part of the city; other projects take place in poor neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city, that is, in the northern and southern parts of Quito.

Quito is situated just north of the centre of Ecuador and is overlooked by Cotapaxi Mountain. North of Quito is the town of Otavalo famous for its Indigenous market. To the east of Ecuador one can head into the dense forest of the Amazon and see the array of animals or head to the west to visit the deserted beaches.

Different racial groups populate Ecuador. About 30% are Indian native belonging to different indigenous groups; 55% is composed by “mestizos” a mixture of Indian and white population in different proportions. The remaining 15% includes white, black, and other races.
