Building & Construction

Want to get your hands dirty? Our building & construction volunteers have the opportunity to work on projects in Kenya, Borneo, Thailand or Peru. Building and construction may involve working on community projects with a local organisation, assisting in the construction of schools or community health centres and helping to raise the living standards of the local community. These projects may be of particular interest to engineering, project management or architecture students who are looking to gain experience at a building site and working with local trades people, or those who simply want to make a tangible contribution to a small community.

KENYA
Building and construction work in Kenya focuses on improving facilities at the local primary school (approximately 800 children), as well as assisting the wider community. Help to improve the local school and provide housing for the sick and elderly through low-level construction, painting and plastering. In Kenya you also get the opportunity to be involved in teaching and wildlife conservation, and embark on an a Big Game animal safari.

PERU
Between teaching and building projects, you’ll never have a dull moment in Peru. Spend your days working at a local school, on a mixture of teaching and construction projects. Recent projects have included helping to build a perimeter wall for the local primary school, as well as aiding in the construction of a sustainable community restaurant. You may also have the opportunity to work alongside social workers to carry out development activities aiming to improve living standards in the communit.

BORNEO
Working on building and construction projects in a rural Sabahan community will allow you to make a valuable contribution and experience the warmth and generosity of these fascinating people. During the placement, you can get involved in low level construction work, painting classrooms or building desks. You can also assist with harvesting and planting crops and environmental and wildlife projects. Other work could also involve teaching and playing sports with locals.

THAILAND
Students from any discipline can carry out work on a community development project in Chiang Mai. The project aims to improve facilities at a women’s shelter that provides a home and protection for young hill tribe women at risk of being trafficked. Contributions from student volunteers are in high demand and can enable the shelter to accommodate and provide protection for more young girls. Student volunteers are primarily involved in building a new dormitory, teaching and farming and may also have the chance to set up fundraising campaigns to provide extra resources for the shelter.

My placement was so much more than a holiday from uni, it was an experience that threw me in the deep end and I learnt so much along the way. The personal relationships that I developed with the In-country staff, the other volunteers and the villagers really made the trip one that was unforgettable for me.
