Community Development

Students interested in carrying out a community development placement would be working in a local or national NGO in either Cambodia or India. A community development placement gives students the opportunity to make a worthwhile contribution to a local community at the same time as gaining valuable professional experience.

CAMBODIA
If you have skills and experience in grant proposal writing, fundraising, media campaigns or website design you may have the opportunity to be involved in the administration and business management of one of the organisations in Siem Reap. Please note that this is a 12-week placement. Please enquire for further details.

INDIA
Placements are available working on a women’s empowerment project aiming to build women’s confidence and sense of self-worth. As part of the project you can work on the following areas:

  • Computer training – providing local girls and women with basic computer skills to increase their employment prospects.
  • English classes – teaching English to improve the confidence, employability and social status of local girls and women.

THAILAND
Students from any discipline can carry out work on a community development project in Chiang Mai. The project aims to improve facilities at a women’s shelter that provides a home and protection for young hill tribe women at risk of being trafficked. Contributions from student volunteers are in high demand and can enable the shelter to accommodate and provide protection for more young girls. Student volunteers are primarily involved in building a new dormitory, teaching and farming and may also have the chance to set up fundraising campaigns to provide extra resources for the shelter.

The best part of working with Antipodeans Abroad was seeing the joy that simple measures, such as soap, can bring to people’s lives. You are humbled beyond belief when you realise what these people survive on, like the mothers who look after 7 children with no income, they are the real heroines.
