Vietnam

Vibrant Vietnam has been blessed with awe-inspiring mountains, glorious coastline and lovely rice fields as far as the eye can see. Immerse yourself in the wonderful culture of Hanoi, a bustling city bursting with culture and tradition. Slurp Pho soup in the markets on your weekends while dedicating your weeks to work at a disability clinic outside of the city.

PROJECT WORK
In Vietnam, we work with one of the city’s main hospitals, Thanh Nhan hospital. It was established in 1958, and at the beginning was a small clinic with 5 beds and 16 doctors/nurses to mainly serve war casualties. Present day it is one of the best district hospitals in Hanoi with 450 patient-beds and 31 wards (17 clinical wards, 07 paraclinical wards and 07 other wards).

The hospital has all the departments you would expect and also works in conjunction with the local university providing internships to Health Science and Nursing students and with other smaller hospitals in the region. We are able to place students in a variety of nursing, surgical and physical therapy wards where other medical and nursing students will be present to help with translation if the staff do not speak adequate English.

* Please note the placement requires a minimum of 4 participants to operate.

ACCOMMODATION
Students live in a local guesthouse or in hospital nursing accommodation close to the hospital. Lunch is provided at the hospital but students need to cover their own breakfast and dinner. Vietnamese cuisine is inexpensive and delicious based on fresh ingredients and subtle flavours. It is easy to explore the streets of Hanoi and discover the variety of food haunts, which will likely become your favourites by the end of the placement.

On weekends you’ll have the chance to visit the vibrant city of Hanoi where you can explore the wonderful Old Quarter and its small alleyways, markets and old colonial buildings. It is also possible to visit Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and other famous sites such as the Temple of Literature and the Army Museum. You may also choose to travel further afield to places such as stunning Halong Bay and Sapa with its array of minority people dressed in traditional clothing. Around Mai Chau there is plenty of majestic countryside where volunteers can enjoy trekking and cycling.
