Nepal

Base yourself in Kathmandu the capital or Pokhara, a beautiful town in the foothills of the Annapurna range. Famous for Mount Everest, Nepal is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Swift running rivers flow from the Himalayas in the north, while flat green plains decorate the south of Nepal. Experience a simple way of life, living with traditional families who rely on their own small crop to provide the bulk of their food. Nepal has a wide range of volunteer projects you can get involved in.

PROJECT WORK

Teaching
With or without an education background students can teach in pairs at a local Nepali or Tibetan primary school. English is generally the medium of teaching and so students can have lots of fun with the children and be fairly adventurous in subjects taught.

Care Work
Lend a hand in a local orphanage and help the kids with their homework, general assistance around the home or with gardening and any renovation happening. The days are rarely structured and so you need to be flexible and proactive to manage your own placement. We work with four orphanages, two of which work with children with mental and physical disabilities.

Health, Physiotherapy, OT, Speech Therapy, Dentistry
Students choosing this option need to be studying a health related discipline. Nursing, medical or health science students may shadow staff during procedures at the chosen hospital. This may include working in different departments, and where possible we can match volunteers with their interests and experience.

Nepali policy stipulates that students have observer status only, which means you are not allowed to perform procedures on patients and will be supervised at all times by local staff. The UniBreak nursing placement in Nepal offers invaluable clinical experience and insight into nursing practice in a tropical, resource-poor setting. To profit from this experience, you must be flexible, self-sufficient and able to direct your own learning.

Interested applicants need to provide a copy of their resume, a letter of recommendation and proof of student status.

ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers will be placed in pairs and will live with local Nepali families. This is a great way to get to know the local community and live life the traditional way. You are encouraged to learn some of the language whilst you are staying with your family. Accommodation will be comfortable and clean but basic.

FREE TIME SUGGESTIONS
There are some fantastic travel opportunities for the weekends. Nepal is a beautiful country with some stunning scenery. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the Himalayas and some wonderful trekking in the surrounding areas. Kathmandu is a busy city and can be polluted, but there are still some excellent areas to explore and some scenic squares and buildings to visit.

Staying at the Tibetan Settlement was also amazing. My host family was incredible! The in-country agent was always willing to help and find the best possible solutions for us. His son was also incredibly welcoming, friendly and professional.
