MAURITIUS

Mauritius is a fascinating island paradise off the coast of Madagascar that combines cultural diversity, historic sights and idyllic sandy beaches. Many believe the biggest asset of Mauritius is the relaxed charm and welcoming nature of its people. In Mauritius you have the chance to work on one a dolphin and whale monitoring project, generating awareness and researching their natural environment.

PROJECT WORK
Adrift in the Indian Ocean, the picturesque island of Mauritius is home to a fascinating mix of cultures and nationalities and some of the richest marine life on earth. There are two placement options in Mauritius, both providing great opportunities for those interested in marine life and conservation.

1. Marine conservation
The marine conservation project aims to mitigate natural and man-made threats to the reef. The project involves working in and around the water where you are required to make note of the state of the reefs on the south west coast of Mauritius, record different varieties of fish and record possible threats and changes to the reef. If necessary, you will be asked to help remove ‘sea spiders’, a harmful natural threat to the reef. Your work on the reef will then allow local project managers to evaluate the status of the ecosystem and provide valuable data leading to better protection for the whole area.

2. Dolphin monitoring
In 2008, a volunteer program was set up to help with the research, conservation and awareness of dolphins and whales inhabiting the seas surrounding Mauritius. The program aims to generate funds to support research and to ensure its continuity. While working on this project, volunteers may be involved in a range of duties and tasks in continuation with ongoing research projects relating to the conservation and livelihood of dolphin populations in the area. This may include data input, conducting information sessions at local schools, helping with beach clean-ups and observing dolphins and whales from boats. The humpback whale season lasts from July to December each year.
