Thailand

Thailand has a huge amount to offer travellers from its exotic, historic culture to awesome natural beauty including scenic beaches, jungles and mountains peopled by isolated and colourful hill tribes. From Bangkok to the hill tribe districts, Thailand is a country full of surprises and delights - fantastic trekking, delicious food and amazing animals to name a few. The people are warm and friendly and your contribution will be much appreciated.

UNIVERSITY FACULTY PROJECTS
Situated in the rolling hills of northern Thailand, UniBreak Group students may live and work with a local non-government organisation to help ethnic communities in the areas of health and community development.

Nursing, Medical and Health
Health faculty groups can work on rotation on a community health outreach
program providing health care to people living in remote villages with limited access
to quality health care and resources. Students may also have the opportunity to work in a central hospital shadowing and assisting local Thai nurses in all departments varying
from maternity to accident and emergency. Another vitally important element
of project work involves carrying out health promotion activities in schools and
childcare centres to promote sustainable health care in the region.

Community Development
Groups work on a project aiming to improve facilities at a women’s shelter that provides a home and protection for young hill tribe women and girls at risk of being trafficked. Contributions are highly valued and can enable the shelter to accommodate and provide protection for more young girls. This placement allows students an opportunity to gain unique and valuable insight into the sinister reality of human trafficking and the challenges of finding long-term solutions in communities with limited access to resources. Work on this project also provides a great opportunity for students interested in carrying out their own research related to their field of study.

There were many great aspects about my experience in Thailand, but I think probably the best part was seeing the ‘real’ Thailand through interacting with the Thai people on a deeper level than one otherwise would just being a tourist.
