Ghana

Ghanaian people have hearts as big as their smiles. They are vivacious and will always make you feel welcome. Ghana is one of the friendliest and easy to travel countries in West Africa. Colourful markets, palm fringed beaches, old coastal forts and Mole National Park are but a few of the highlights.

UNIVERSITY FACULTY PROJECTS
Our University groups in Ghana have the opportunity to work in rural hospitals, clinics, schools, community centres, orphanages, schools, and/or non-government organisations alongside local staff. This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience working within the Ghanaian health, education or care work systems and with minimal resources, facilities and funding.

Nursing, Medical and Health
Groups may work on a rotational basis assisting and observing local staff in a number of clinics, outreach health centres and hospitals. Placements may be tailored to meet the specific skill set of the students and requirements of the university.

Education
Teach English to local children in rural schools. Schools are very basic with limited resources and are challenging but rewarding work environments. Class sizes range from 20-50. Ghanaians have a range of English levels and students will be expected to teach based on the local curriculum. Students may also undertake care work in orphanages and work alongside local non-government agencies who provide community development assistance in a number of areas.

ACCOMMODATION
Students may stay with local families, generally with someone from the organisations they are associated with. The family experience in Ghana is the one of the most rewarding parts of the placement. Ghanaians are very welcoming and friendly. Students quickly feel part of the family and are immersed in local rural life. Alternative accommodation in guesthouses is also available.

I feel as if I have become more confident and independent since living in Ghana. I feel I can solve my own problems and am also more comfortable within myself. This experience has helped me realise how unimportant some things are back home and prepared me for the next stage of my life.
