Borneo & Cambodia

CONSTRUCTION, TEACHING, CONSERVATION

Lose yourself in the rich natural treasures of Borneo, from the mighty Mt Kinabalu to the brilliant Sipaden reef teeming with colourful marine life. Explore jungle, beach and mountains whilst living alongside a rural Sabahan community - one of the true highlights of the Borneo GapBreak experience. Equally fascinating is Borneo’s ethnic heritage, its distinctive tribes and people known for their warmth and love of music.

Looking for the complete South-East Asian experience? Top off your two months in Borneo with one month volunteering in Cambodia. Please note, an additional month in Cambodia is not mandatory for all GapBreak volunteers.

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

Borneo

Become part of the rural community through a variety of community and environmental work.

  • Teaching in the primary and pre-school
  • Teaching English to the village elders
  • Refurbishing school classrooms
  • Assisting with harvesting and planting
  • Development of a local agro-tourism project and indigenous medicine garden
  • Reforest areas of jungle that have become sparse

A fantastic component of the placement involves living on picturesque Mantanani Island, working alongside the community to raise awareness about conservation of the reef and marine life.

Cambodia
An activity-packed one-month awaits you on our GapBreak Cambodia placement. Work on projects alongside international volunteers as part of a special Khmer community, helping improve the standards of living. Volunteering in Cambodia involves supporting an orphanage, construction, teaching and sustainable farming initiatives. Take trips to ancient temples, the killing fields, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

ACCOMMODATION
Settle into local-style traditional long houses and tented accommodation over your time in Borneo and Cambodia. Whilst working on the jungle project in Borneo, you will sleep in tree hammocks under the starry skies, a truly memorable experience. There is also an opportunity to stay with a local family for a short period with another GapBreak volunteer.
