Argentina

TEACHING, CARE WORK, COMMUNITY WORK

As the second largest country in South America and the eighth largest country in the world, Argentina offers an amazing variety of things to see, from long wide beaches in the east and the stunning Andes mountain ranges in the west. You will be based in Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city with a huge amount of South American flair.

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
In Argentina you can choose to work on one of the following projects:

1. Teaching English (TEFL) in private schools: You can assist teachers in a variety of classes including English, geography, PE and environmental education in both primary and secondary private schools in central Buenos Aires. The majority of lessons are taught in English and you will be supported by a local teacher who will offer assistance in the classroom and with lesson planning.

2. Volunteer Work: Here you will have the opportunity to work in the poorer areas of the city participating in a variety of volunteer work with a local NGO. The work will vary according to what the NGO is involved in at the time and also your ability in Spanish. The work may involve the following:

Teaching basic English
Assisting with homework assignments
Working at a soup-kitchen
After-school programs
Recreational activities
Work at a community centre
Volunteer with HIV-affected children

No Spanish is required for the TEFL placement, however you are required to have a basic to intermediate level of Spanish to take part in the volunteer work. Those with a limited amount of Spanish will only be permitted to work in a few locations where the Argentinean staff have sufficient English skills.

ACCOMMODATION
There are two choices of accommodation for our GapBreak students. You can live with a local host family in the heart of Buenos Aires, practicing your Spanish and living life as the locals do. Alternatively, you can choose to live with other volunteers in student residences. Here, you will cook your own meals and share a room with up to three other gap year students.

Cost includes:

  • Pre-departure training course
  • Preparation and advice prior to departure
  • Transfers to and from airport and placement when arriving / departing on specified dates
  • Meet and greet on arrival
  • Week long Spanish course
  • Half board (host family only, student residence food not included)
  • Accommodation
  • Orientation
  • Volunteer project
  • Back-up and support in-country during placement

Costs not included:

  • Airfares
  • Visas
  • Vaccinations
  • Travel Insurance
  • Travel related documentation

Keen to teach English in South America? Why not check out our other destinations such as Ecuador or Peru.

Argentina was the perfect travel and volunteer location. There is incredible food, an amazing lifestyle and well organised volunteer projects. The children we worked with were so difficult to leave and made the entire trip so worthwhile.
