Borneo

Borneo brings a sense of adventure and remoteness to any expedition. The main jungle of Northern Borneo is one of the oldest and least changed in the world, with huge limestone cave systems, beautiful beaches, Mount Kinabalu and the orangutans at Sepliok. Borneo is also a destination of significant historical interest to Australians because of the infamous ANZAC death march from Sandakan - Ranau during WWII.

COMMUNITY SEVICE

  • Projects are based in either the Kelabit Highlands or Brunei
  • Work in remote villages on ongoing projects run by local communities
  • Projects help communities become self-sufficient in regards to tourism
  • Through your assistance, we are combating the need for logging and the exodus of local people out of the jungle to the major cities

TREKS

  • Teams usually carry out two treks in Borneo
  • This can include a 2 or 3-day jungle trek out of Brunei and east back into Borneo
  • Stay in traditional longhouses
  • Teams also complete a 2-day trek up and down Mount Kinabalu - at 4095m, the highest mountain in this area of South-East Asia

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Sandakan War Memorial to remember the Anzac Death Marches of WWII
  • Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary
  • Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, explore the local markets and city tours
  • The islands of TAR National Park for snorkelling and other beach activities.

Sample Itinerary

What set the Borneo trip apart from the usual school trip was that the students were responsible for budgeting, organising accomodation and transport and selecting places to eat. The students became confident and capable young women.
