Rob Hutchinson, Community Work, Kenya
I will always treasure my memories of Kenya. In just a few short months, I was privileged enough to live within, taste, witness, hear, learn from and interact with a unique and natural culture, all the while sharing the experience with some of the most beautiful people I will ever have the pleasure of befriending.
The placements run by Antipodeans Abroad are not windows into the lives of others, but an invitation. The program in Kenya allowed us to effect real change within a number of communities, be it through building more efficient brick stoves, teaching at the local school, renovating a nursery, helping to promote environmental awareness, constructing new teaching facilities or simply, and perhaps most importantly, allowing the raw beauty and spirit of the locals to wash over us. Just what made the trip special for me is difficult to put in to words.
This experience left me speechless and thankful. Thankful for the chance to establish exciting and otherwise impossible friendships, to see my hard work leave smiles on a stranger’s face, to see a piece of the world that I can’t wait to go back to and to live a life that taught me more than any classroom environment could.
